Montana Backcountry Adventures and Montana Mountaineering Association have teamed up to offer the first ever spring mountaineering course to Bell Lake! MMA instructors will use the Branham Peaks couloirs as the classroom for Bell Lake's first ever spring mountaineering course.
This course will introduce and provide participants with the skill-set needed to become competent and self-reliant ski mountaineers by integrating technical mountaineering systems into skiing in the spring condition setting, focusing on Steep skiing techniques, self arrest, booting with and without crampons, ascent techniques(whippet and short tool use), using ropes for ski descents, making natural and snow anchors, and belay and rappel techniques.
This 3 day, 2 night (24 total course hours) session will be a combination of lectures and on-snow, instructional tours on Branham Peak immediately outside the yurt.
Each participant is required to have their own rescue and backcountry gear including all of the following: avalanche transceiver, probe, shovel, proper clothing, skis with skins or a split board with skins. If you are on a snowboard, you will need snowshoes for uphill travel. It is also important to be familiar with and able to use all of your gear. We'll go over a full list of recommended gear after booking. Technical climbing gear will be provided.
Course cost is $500 per individual, and includes course instruction and materials, lodging at the Bell Lake Yurt and all meals each day.
