The magical Hyalite Canyon – “an internationally recognized ice climbing venue” – is the perfect environment to get into ice climbing.

This one day program focuses on developing a strong foundation. It begins with learning the basics: ice axe and crampon technique; and progresses from low angle terrain to steep ice climbing. Belaying methods, protective systems, and gear are also covered.

Cost per person: $225

This two day course is designed to take beginner ice climbers to the next level. Topics covered will include building ice anchors and placing ice screws on lead, among other more advanced skills.

Problem Solving in Technical Terrain

Ideally, we all want to avoid getting into sticky situation when in the mountains. However, when Murphy strikes, it is good to have some tricks up your sleeve to solve these problems.

This class is designed to help expand your tool kit for problem solving on ascent or descent. How to get through difficult sections on climbs, deal with getting off route, stuck ropes on rappel, the list goes on..

Custom Courses

Montana Mountaineering Association offers custom courses & instruction in rock climbing, ice climbing, mountaineering, and backcountry skiing. Examples include: crevasse rescue, top rope anchors, traditional gear placement, women’s specific courses, school programs, mountaineering skills, etc. Please contact us to create your custom mountain learning experience.
